Disability Wales welcomes the discussion by the Senedd Petitions Committee earlier this week (March 10) on making Blue Badges lifelong for individuals with lifelong diagnoses.

This petition highlights the lesser-known provision that reassessment is not always required, yet its inconsistent implementation across local authorities creates confusion. An information request conducted by STAND North Wales – Julie Meese has further revealed these discrepancies.

The committee is now drafting recommendations to present to the Welsh Government, addressing the concerns raised by disabled people and Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs). As Luke Fletcher MS stated, the goal is to “crystallise conversations that have happened, bring them together with a clear set of recommendations and a clear pathway for getting this over the line.”

We fully support Carolyn Thomas MS in her call for clearer guidance and comprehensive training for local authorities. Ensuring consistent and fair implementation will not only improve access but also build confidence in the system.

These discussions reflect a shared commitment to meaningful change. We appreciate the committee’s ongoing work and look forward to the recommendations that will follow.
