Disability Wales is pleased to present the Access to Politics Toolkit, a practical resource for disabled people interested in entering and navigating political life.
Co-produced with members of the Access to Politics Grassroots Network and informed by their lived experience of political participation, the Toolkit provides practical advice and resources to help disabled people navigate the complex world of politics, whether they are standing for office, participating as an independent candidate, joining a political party, or working to further the rights of disabled people through activism.
Disabled people make up at least one fifth of the Welsh population, yet this is not reflected among elected members across Wales. The absence of disabled people in decision-making roles means that policies and services are not informed by lived experience.
The Toolkit aims to help address some of the barriers disabled people face, while highlighting and addressing some common misconceptions about getting involved in politics. It provides step-by-step guidance for disabled people at different stages of their political journey.
The Toolkit follows the launch of the Access to Politics Charter, which set out practical steps for political parties to make political life more accessible and inclusive for disabled people. Together, the Charter and Toolkit support change both within political organisations and for disabled people navigating their own political journeys.
