Paying tribute to a dear friend and former colleague, Becky Newsome

A black and white photo of our dear friend and former colleague, Becky Newsome, who smiles broadly. There are trees in the background.

We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Becky’s passing recently after a courageous battle with a rare form of cancer. Becky joined Disability Wales in 2014, where she led the development of our direct payments cooperatives project. It didn’t take long for Becky to fit in with the team—her warmth, humour, energy and hard work touched us all.

Becky’s commitment to disabled people’s rights was evident from the start. She shared the values of the organisation and strove for positive change in disabled people’s lives. We were immensely proud and delighted when she went on to work for the Equality and Human Rights Commission in 2016, where she continued the vital campaign for human rights.

Our hearts go out to Becky’s husband, daughter, family, and friends. You are in our thoughts during this profoundly painful time. We hold you close in our memories of Becky and in the knowledge that she touched so many lives in meaningful and lasting ways.

We will remember Becky with affection, gratitude, and a sense of profound wonder at the impact one person can have on so many.

Sleep well, comrade.
