Disability Wales is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking Charter designed to support Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent people in standing for elected office in Wales.
Developed by the Access to Politics Grassroots Network, composed primarily of disabled individuals, and funded by the Welsh Government, this Charter marks a significant step toward a more inclusive and representative democracy.
The Charter sets out clear, practical commitments for political parties to adopt, ensuring equal and equitable access to both local and national government. It is the first of its kind in Wales and complements similar work in Scotland, where Inclusion Scotland’s Charter has already been signed by the six major political parties.
With over 20% of the Welsh population identifying as Deaf, disabled, or neurodivergent, their voices remain underrepresented in political decision-making. This Charter aims to change that by removing barriers and empowering more disabled people to take up positions of leadership and influence.
Kat Watkins, Access to Politics Project Officer at Disability Wales, said:
“This Charter is about creating real change. It’s about ensuring that disabled people are not just consulted but represented in the rooms where decisions about their lives are made. The Social Model of Disability teaches us: ‘Nothing about us without us.’ This Charter puts that principle into action.”
Political parties across Wales are now being invited to sign up to the Charter and demonstrate their commitment to inclusive politics. By doing so, they will help build a Wales where disabled people can thrive, not just survive.
