In a Disability Wales vote, members agreed that inclusive access to high street shops and services was an issue of major concern in Wales. We want to act on these concerns and find out the true picture across Wales, report on our findings and influence those with the power to change things for the better. Why campaign now? In 2004, a change to the law (the Disability Discrimination Act) meant that all service providers for example shops, libraries, pubs, cafes, post offices, clubs have to provide reasonable physical access into and around premises. This was done to make sure that disabled people are treated equally to non-disabled people. Four years on, we are disappointed that there are still many services that are inaccessible to many disabled people with a wide range and diversity of impairments. There has been progress in some areas but the pace of change needs to speed up. We want to encourage service providers to change for the better, so that disabled people have the right to access their services. We will also celebrate good examples of when providers get it right. What will the campaign do? Phase 1: from January to June 2009, we will be Supporting activities in a typical Welsh town to find out what is happening in the local high street, by working with local voluntary groups, the local authority and the business community. Setting up a new website with a dedicated campaign area Encouraging our supporters to undertake similar activities in their town Running an independent research project with Cardiff University Phase 2: from July to September, we will be: Analysing the information you have gathered and put on our website Producing an independent campaign report for publication in September Influencing decision makers about what needs to change How can my group get involved? Your involvement will be vital to the success of the campaign. We need as much information as possible about inclusive access to high streets across Wales.
