Access problems

  • Seven in ten (73%) disabled people with mobility and sensory impairments in Great Britain say that they have difficulty accessing goods and services.
  • 76% of disabled people in Wales faced at least some difficulty accessing services

The things that make the most difficulty for disabled people are barriers to access to the built environment, namely:

  • Steps at entrance of building - 45%
  • Heavy internal/external doors - 40%
  • Use of disabled parking by non-disabled customers - 39%
  • No lifts - 37%
  • No accessible toilet - 25%

These are disabling barriers in just one aspect of disabled people’s lives – access to services. Similar barriers exist in relation to employment, housing, transport and many other areas.

The DDA is supposed to remove physical barriers to premises from October 2004. In reality, we have along way to go before we can all enjoy an inclusive built environment.

Disability Wales will campaign and work to change our inaccessible built environment. We want to see old buildings altered to welcome disabled people, and to make sure that new buildings are fully inclusive and accessible for everyone.
