Our human rights
Disabled people’s human rights are explained in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Convention gives a list of rules that governments have to follow to make sure that disabled people get their human rights. In Wales we use the social model of disability and we refer to the Convention as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Disabled People.
The Convention was written by the United Nations or UN for short. The UN is an organisation that helps different countries work together.
Reporting on how our rights are met
Every four years the UN gets a report from the government and one from disabled people.
The government report says how it thinks disabled people are getting their rights. The report from disabled people says whether they are getting or not getting their rights.
Disability Wales have worked with other Disabled People’s Organisations across Great Britain to create a ‘shadow report’. In this report we provide evidence that shows what is happening to disabled people and whether their rights are being met or not.
We also have produced a report just for Wales. We will launch our report on Wednesday 15th March.
How did we write our report?
The evidence has been gathered from disabled people. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our events and replied to our survey. You told us about the issues you have experienced and we have used this for our report. We have also used research to provide more evidence to add to the report.
We have listened to what people say they think that UK and Welsh Governments should do to make sure disabled people get their human rights.
Our report has gone to the UN Committee on the Rights of Disabled People. In our report we asked the Committee to ask the UK and Welsh Governments how they will make sure disabled people get their human rights.
What happens next?
Disability Wales will be taking evidence to the UN Committee on the Rights of Disabled People on March 13th. This will take place in Geneva.
We will talk to the committee about how the UK Government is failing disabled people in Wales and across the UK. We will select the most important issues and ask the committee to make recommendations to the UK and Welsh Governments to improve life for disabled people.
We will be reporting on our visit on social media and on our website.
