Right to Control Consultation Event

On 21st September 2009 Disability Wales hosted a consultation event on behalf of the Right to Control Policy team at the Office for Disability Issues. The event was held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Wrexham, NE Wales and was attended by approximately 60 people representing a broad range of interests.

Although progress on Individual Budgets in social care has been slow in Wales, the proposals for a Right to Control contained within the Welfare Reform Bill are of relevance as welfare is administered by Westminster. The proposed legislation will enable disabled adults to take control of a range of funding streams to which they are entitled. Following "trailblazer" pilot projects and roll out in England, the Welsh Assembly will consider the most appropriate arrangements for Wales.

Presentations were made at the consultation event by Raman Dhaliwal of the Right to Control Policy Team, and Rhian Davies, Chief Executive of Disability Wales. Participants then worked in small groups to consider some of the consultation questions. Feedback from the groups was included in Disability Wales’ consultation response
