Disability Wales marked the UN International Day of Disabled People in Flint
Thursday 3rd December 2009This year Disability Wales celebrated the International Day of Disabled People in Flint North Wales. Disability Wales and local groups of disabled people linked to the Flintshire Disability Forum will carry out an ‘access quest’ along Flint high street with the aim of exploring the accessibility of the high street. The purpose of the event is to collect further evidence to support the findings of the recent Streets Ahead campaign report (www.disabilitywales.org).
Despite the wind and the rain Disability Wales Access Quest to mark the International Day of Disabled People was well attended and was a success. Five Local Councillors, Helen Michelle Jones, Carol Ellis, Marion Bateman, Mike Peers and Carolyn Cattermoul and Eleanor Burnham AM shadowed small groups of Disabled People from groups linked to the Flintshire Disability Forum; the groups were Buckely, Sandycroft and Holywell. Each group had a shopping list item to buy. A newspaper, a magazine, a loaf of bread and a bunch of flowers, another group just pointed out access barriers along Flint main shopping street as they encountered them. Rhyan Berrigan – Policy Officer Access and Transport and Michelle Herbert – Membership Services Manager liaised with Colin Burrows a Trustee from Flintshire Disability Forum to arrange the event.
A reporter from the Flintshire Chronicle covered the access 'quest' interviewing officials, disabled individuals and Disability Wales Staff and took photos. The article will be published in a Christmas special issue of the Flintshire Chronicle.
