I was a civil servant working with the Dep’t of Transport in Cardiff until a spinal condition and deafness forced my early retirement in 1991.

Being unable to work, I took up the challenge of voluntary vocations to try to keep my mind working and to date have been involved with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the British Red Cross of Cardiff.

On moving to west Newport, I became interested in social housing and became a member of the board of Newport City Homes working to improve social housing conditions.

I joined the Exec Committee of Newport Civic Society to try to help Newport city to reconcile and develop its heritage and also became a councillor with Marshfield Community Council which led to joining Newport Planning Focus Group.

All of these activities helped me to develop an interest in disability affairs which moved me to join Newport Access Group and ultimately on to this new appointment as a DW director where I hope the experience gained in earlier employment and interests can be put to productive use.
